PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — On Thursday, June 5, at around 6:20 a.m., a cement truck drove off Florida's Turnpike into a canal in southern Palm Beach County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the incident occurred at around mile marker 76, near the Glades Road exit in Boca Raton.
When units arrived, they noticed the vehicle's rear axle was visible from the canal, but the front of the truck was submerged in 5-10 feet of water.
FHP says the dump truck was traveling northbound when it drove through a guardrail fence, a grass shoulder, and a chain link fence.
The truck continued traveling in a northeast direction, where it eventually drove into, and submerged completely into, a nearby canal.
Neither the driver nor the passenger was able to escape from the vehicle.
The driver, a 49-year-old male, was transported to Delray Medical Center for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The passenger, a 50-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene.
This remains an ongoing investigation.
